Get involved

Get involved with Starts at Home Day on Friday 29 August 2025

It all starts at home. A home is the foundation of a healthy, safe and happy life. Supported housing helps thousands of people across England who need help to live independently and live well at home. But after years of funding cuts, these vital homes are at risk of closure. This year, we’re calling for the government to #SaveOurSupportedHousing.

Without a stable foundation, many people who need support to live independently will face an uncertain future. The research shows that without supported housing, NHS hospital beds would face 110,000 more days of delayed discharge, and 41,000 more people would face homelessness.

This Starts at Home Day is an opportunity to tell the government and decision makers about the crisis, and what we need to do to fix it. There are many ways you can support the campaign, from a social media post showing your vital support work, to inviting your local MP or councillor to visit your organisation.

How can I prepare for Starts at Home Day?

Invite your local MP, councillor or mayor to visit

It’s more important than ever that our elected representatives understand and value the vital role supported housing plays in building thriving communities. Inviting politicians to see your work first hand and meet your team and residents is the best way to make that lasting impact.

To create the biggest splash on Starts at Home Day, we need as many visits as possible to take place on or before the day itself so photos or videos from the visits can all be shared at the same time. But of course a visit from a local representative is worthwhile at any time.

To help you host a visit, you can:

  • Use our template letter to invite an MP. We’ve put together a template letter you can use to invite your local political representatives to visit one of your schemes.
  • Download our briefing for MPs. We’ve put together a briefing you can use you help explain the challenges supported housing is facing, and how they can help be part of the solution.
  • Let us know about your visit. If you are organising a visit with a MP or a councillor then we want to hear about. Get in touch with our team to let them know about your plans.

Is a visit not possible? Write to your local MP, councillor or mayor instead

If you are unable to invite a local representative along in person, it is still worth contacting them to tell them about the value of supported housing.

Share your residents’ stories

Nothing demonstrates the positive impact of supported housing better than real life stories. There is huge value in demonstrating just what supported housing is, and showcasing its positive impact on thousands of lives. Sharing the voices and stories of your residents is a powerful way to demonstrate the impact of supported housing.

Don’t forget to include the hashtag #StartsAtHome and #SaveOurSupportedHousing in all your social media posts.
