Sam’s story

After leaving prison, Sam wanted to create a better life for himself but faced homelessness and problems with substance misuse.

Sam struggled with substance misuse and after committing a crime, was sentenced to prison. On release, he lived in transitional accommodation for a while but soon found himself at risk of homelessness.

What difference did supported housing make? Nacro support workers were able to be there for Sam, to help him develop essential skills and build his confidence. They also worked closely with probation and other services to manage risk, and help Sam move on positively with his life.

Having somewhere stable to live, and support around him, meant Sam has been able to rebuild his relationship with his parents who started to visit him regularly in his home. With support to take on everyday tasks, Sam has built his confidence knowing he is able to manage his life. With support and determination, he also found a job – and recently got a promotion.

Having a secure home, support around him, and access to substance misuse support (as well as other support through probation), Sam has remained drug free.

Sam is really proud of how far he has come, of being in work and off drugs. Having a safe and secure place to live, and support around him has made all the difference to Sam – he now feels confident and ready to move on into independent accommodation.
