Edna and Rashford’s story

Edna and Rashford have been married for more than 50 years. When Edna had a fall and needed more support, moving into extra care housing made sure they stayed together.

In 2020, Edna suffered an unexpected fall in the home she shared with her husband, Rashford. It was clear that Edna needed more support to live safely at home, but didn’t want to leave her community in Bradford or move into a residential home without Rashford.

The couple have lived in Bradford ever since they relocated from Jamaica in 1961. They realised that Housing 21’s extra care housing would suit them because they could stay in their area and move in together while Edna could receive the care that she needed.

With an extra care home, the couple can grow older in a home that works for them. Housing 21 found them a ground-floor flat that suited their accessibility needs and although Rashford doesn’t have any care needs now, the couple are able to futureproof.

For Rashford, their home suits the couple really well: “Extra care with Housing 21 suits us as a couple because we can remain together while one of us can receive care.”

“We enjoy the social aspect of living in extra care, all the residents are lovely, and the care workers are very helpful.”

For Edna, the privacy of their home is important: “We really appreciate the security of our flat and that no-one can come inside unless we let them in.”

After moving into an extra care scheme, Edna and Rashford have security and peace of mind, knowing that they are living in a safe home.
