Joyce S’ story

When her husband passed away, Joyce was struggling on her own at home and knew the time had come to move somewhere smaller and more secure.

Ten years ago when her husband passed away, Joyce could no longer manage living in her large home. She visited a number of WDH’s independent living schemes across the Wakefield district before deciding that Baileygate Court was the perfect place to live.

In her flat, she now has Care Link who can respond 24 hours a day if she has a fall or needs to speak to someone. Joyce also gets a daily visit from the Scheme Manager to check on her wellbeing.

Baileygate Court runs regular social events including coffee mornings, bingo, arts and craft sessions and more to help prevent residents feeling lonely or isolated.  Joyce says: “You can be as involved or independent as you like. There is always something going on for people to get involved in but if that’s not for you then you can stay in your own flat. The choice is completely yours. I find it’s a great way to meet new people!”

Reflecting on her time at the scheme, Joyce says, “I feel a lot more secure in independent living, I can maintain my own independence and it gives my family peace of mind knowing there is always help there for me if I need it.”

Help raise awareness

Thousands of people have gained their independence through supported housing. The Starts at Home campaign aims to ensure that people who need extra support will always have a home that meets their needs.
