John’s story

Originally from Scotland, John has lived in supported housing since 2006. Before living in supported housing, John was homeless.

John has struggled with drug abuse in the past and,

with a dual diagnosis of paranoia and schizophrenia alongside mobility difficulties,

still needs the support of One Housing staff. He enjoys walking every day and keeping himself busy.

When he joined One Housing, John was supported to recover from his drug and alcohol addictions. Activities like music therapy, trips out, healthy living sessions and social inclusion have helped John stay sober.

For John, supported housing means always having someone to support him. Whether that’s helping him with something he wants to achieve or having a friendly face when he’s in a bad way. John says talking to One Housing staff makes him feel safe and reassured. He doesn’t plan on going back on drugs again, even if he does hear voices.

Help raise awareness

Thousands of people have gained their independence through supported housing. The Starts at Home campaign aims to ensure that people who need extra support will always have a home that meets their needs.
