James’ story

Through supported housing, James has been able to maintain his health and wellbeing in a safe and stable environment.

James is 62 and was homeless, sleeping in the gardens of a local Baptist Church.

He was very vulnerable and at risk of exploitation physically and financially by a local gang. Assisted by the local vicar, he was referred to Wellingborough Homes by the Local Authority. Wellingborough Homes offered James a self contained tenancy in an Independent Living Scheme and were able to provide support through its Independent Living team to help him settle into his new home.

James has had a history of insecure housing and frequent moves, meaning adjusting to a longer term tenancy was difficult for him to make. He would frequently enquire if we were going to ask him to move out in the near future. Over time Wellingborough Homes were able to work with him to organise his finances and benefit entitlements and help him to access furniture from local charitable sources.

Despite having ongoing alcohol dependency and a previously troubled life, James has been able to manage his tenancy and over time felt confident enough to disclose to us that he was a victim of financial abuse. James’ life has been totally changed through being able to access the Independent Living Schemes. With the support that it can provide, he has been able to maintain his health and wellbeing in a safe and stable environment.
