Jack’s story

"It's made an immense difference"

“I moved in to Eldon Street 14 months ago. Initially I was supposed to move in with my wife Sheila but she unfortunately passed away in April 2016.”

At 80 years old and after the passing of this wife, Jack would have had to move in with his son, which would have meant having to leave Bolton. “I would have been uprooted from my friends and have to leave them behind.”

With the support of Eldon St Extra Care Unit, Jack can still live independently, near his friends, and can still socialise. “I have now created a lovely garden and spend a lot of time their on a daily basis. I have got involved with the residents committee and joined in the many social activities such as bingo, reading, chair based activities. I have also been to New Zealand and France.”

Jack says “I now spend my time gardening, reading, swimming, spending time with family, and cooking, travelling and staying as active as possible. Supported housing means everything to me. It’s a lifeline for me. I have everything I need to hand and anything I don’t have, I can just ask for. I’m totally happy here.”

Help raise awareness

Thousands of people have gained their independence through supported housing. The Starts at Home campaign aims to ensure that people who need extra support will always have a home that meets their needs.
