Derrick had problems with his balance and walking, and his old flat had two flights of stairs. After he fell and ended up in hospital, it was decided that he couldn’t live in his home anymore.
Derrick recently moved into Oakwood Flats in Haywards Heath, a scheme that supports older people with their housing needs. Living in a one bed ground floor flat means that he finds life easier as there are no stairs and he can easily bring his shopping in.
Derrick is independent and likes to stay active. His place at Oakwood Flats allows him to maintain this lifestyle, to visit friends, and pursue his interests in drawing and graphic design. Derrick is able to store his electronic scooter easily, and it now takes him only 15 minutes to get into the town centre.
What does supported housing mean to Derrick? “It’s a relief knowing I’ve got an assured tenancy. I don’t have to worry about having to move, social housing has definitely supported me.”
