Bev’s story

Bev challenged herself to overcome the issues holding her back and was named a North Star Inspirational Tenant of 2015.

North Star’s Hestia service gave Bev a lifeline when her life was most turbulent. Here is her story…

As a result of severe mental health issues, Bev has lived in institutions of every kind for most of her adult life. In May 2015, she took the enormous step of moving to Hestia, a provider of settled accommodation and intensive support for vulnerable women at risk of homelessness in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool.

Initially, she struggled with living in the community but has made an enormous effort, attending every tenant involvement activity — despite her difficulties with group activities — and completing English and Maths qualifications, among other achievements.

Bev received an award for inspirational tenant of the year in 2015, and she continues to go from strength to strength thanks to her admirable commitment and the support she receives from the service. Without supported housing she believes she would still be in a mental health hospital.

“If they start cutting places like Hestia, they’re going to have an influx at hospitals… which is going to make things worse for everyone in the long run.”
