Aleks’ story

"Without having a stable place I wouldn’t have been able to finish university and be where I am now.”

Aleks came to Look Ahead’s Southwark Young People service when she was 17 after her relationship with her mother broke down. She lived in supported accommodation for three years, trained as one of our Peer Support Volunteers, and has now progressed into employment as one of our newest Housing Officers.

Moving into supported housing gave Aleks to help she needed. She said: “My support worker motivated me a lot, she noticed when I stopped going to college and sorted me out. I volunteered with Look Ahead when I was at university, and it showed me that this was the field I wanted to go into. Volunteering gave me the confidence and knowledge to become a support worker, and I have pushed myself further by applying successfully for a housing officer position at Look Ahead.”

Help raise awareness

Thousands of people have gained their independence through supported housing. The Starts at Home campaign aims to ensure that people who need extra support will always have a home that meets their needs.
