Alan’s story

"I feel 100% better living here. There is loads to do and always someone to chat to."

Alan was living in a block of flats in the city centre where there was a lot of anti social behaviour. “When I was working it wasn’t too bad but once I retired it started to get to me. I was really lonely and it was making me ill. There was loads of trouble there all of the time and it felt like living in solitary confinement.”

In 2013, Alan moved into extra care housing for over 55’s in Staffordshire and it changed his life. “I feel 100% better living here. There is loads to do and always someone to chat to. I’ve got lots of friends and we often get together for a cuppa or pop over the pub for a beer and the football!”

Alan thinks that he wouldn’t be alive if he hadn’t have moved into supported housing. “It saved my life and I couldn’t be happier. I can’t think of a better place to be! This place means everything to me. There’s nothing these people won’t do for me and the support I get is second to none. Everyone is brilliant.”

Help raise awareness

Thousands of people have gained their independence through supported housing. The Starts at Home campaign aims to ensure that people who need extra support will always have a home that meets their needs.
