Susan’s story

I feel safe here and I’m living in a home that I can manage

Supported housing helps people that may have been struggling with physical or mental health issues to maintain their independence or get their lives back on track. Finding a home where they feel safe, secure and free of financial worries can help transform their fortunes at the most challenging of times. This is Susan’s story.

Susan (62) who lives in a Futures Housing Group sheltered scheme in Alfreton, Derbyshire.

Before moving into supported housing in 2015, Susan was living alone in a three bedroom property. She was paying spare room subsidy and struggling financially and that meant that her home was at risk.

“The pressure of the situation made me feel isolated and depressed,” she said.

“I had no self-esteem and found it difficult to make friends, I just didn’t have any confidence around other people.”

Following support from Futures, Susan now lives in a smaller, more manageable property which means she is better off financially and less anxious about getting into debt.

She also receives regular visits from a Neighbourhood Support Coordinator (NSC) who has helped her overcome her fear of meeting new people.

“We’ve worked out different coping mechanisms to help me handle things and that’s enabled me to really manage my depression,” she said.

“If I have any health concerns there is now someone there to offer reassurance and advice. I’ve been able to join in with activities at the scheme and that has made me a lot more confident.”

As well as the support provided by her NSC, Susan has also signed up for a 24hour Telecare response service, which has provided even more security and reassurance.

“I feel safe here and I’m living in a home that I can manage,” she said.

“If I hadn’t moved into supported housing, I know that things would’ve got so much worse. My financial worries would’ve taken over and I’d be even more depressed and isolated from other people.

“I’m not alone anymore and I’ve made new friends. Meeting new people and going to events has helped me feel confident and healthy.”
